*THIS MESSAGE WAS FIRST SHARED MONDAY NOVEMBER 10th*
Dear SLLIS Families:
As we continue our emergency planning in case of widespread civic unrest, we want you to be aware of the following:
If necessary, we will go to a shelter-in-place or lockdown mode at impacted schools. Shelter-in-place indicates that all exits to school are closed and no one is allowed in or out of the building. Lockdown indicates the same, with the added precaution of interior doors also being locked and all staff and students remaining in their room or another safe location. You will be notified via Bright Arrow if either of these are activated and notified again when it is safe to pick up your child(ren) at school. Heads of School will determine what level of security to activate at their individual school.
We will talk to students as needed and as appropriate about the situation, but please remember to talk to your child about what is going on in your neighborhood, near the school or across the community. Reassure them that you will be safe and that they will be safe. Remind them of your own family emergency plans.
If there are significant disturbances across town while school is in session, we can expect bus service to be disrupted. If that is the case, we may not be able to reach the bus company or we may face long delays in contacting them. We have already had conversations with First Student and have designated The Chinese School/International School (3740 Marine, St. Louis, MO 63118) as our “safe school”. We have instructed First Student to return all students to the Marine school if the bus is unable to deliver a student to their normal bus stop. Marine was chosen because it is in a quiet neighborhood with nothing nearby to draw protesters. The two Heads of School that share the Marine campus will be in charge of the facility for as long as there are children in the building and all SLLIS staff have been alerted that they will need to be at their school site until any danger has passed.
- If you have to pick up your child at Marine, please bring identification and if you have to send a friend or family member, please remind them to bring identification. WE WILL BE CHECKING IDS BEFORE RELEASING STUDENTS. We will send all available staff to Marine to assist and they will not know all the people coming to pick up children.
- If bus service is disrupted, PLEASE DO NOT TRY TO INTERCEPT BUSES AND REMOVE YOUR CHILD. Bus drivers will not necessarily know you and WILL NOT RELEASE CHILDREN except at their normal stop (if it is safe to do so) or at the Marine campus (if necessary).
