Dear SLLIS Community,
In October, a group of educators identified thirteen 5th grade students who display current or potential leadership qualities that we would like to foster. Since then, the group has met every Monday for about 90 minutes after school to take part the inaugural year of our Leadership Academy.
During the initial stage of the Leadership Academy, students work together to solve problems and participate in discussions around situations that demonstrate the characteristics that IB learners strive toward: inquirers, knowledgeable, thinkers, communicators, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-takers, balanced and reflective. Currently, they are redesigning school uniforms for our current and future campuses. Toward the end of the year, they will be thinking about what it means to build a school culture they would like their class to have as they enter The International School.
Some days, we sit in a circle and conduct a conversation in the Socratic Seminar format where every student offers his or her critical analysis of a problem or reading, and each student learns to build off the previous idea. Other days, students are given challenges for which they need to cooperate and offer their own unique skill-sets to help the group reach the goal. As we move on to the next phase of the Leadership Academy, we will be working with the St. Louis Actors’ Studio (SLAS) to build on our skills through targeted improvisation activities. We have been practicing with some orientation activities, and as you can guess, the kids love being active in their learning. At the end of the school year, Leadership Academy participants will put on a special performance with SLAS. I’m certain that the performance they decide on at the end of the year will surprise and impress us all.
We would like to invite our school community to stop by and say hello – Whether you would like to impart some wisdom about effective leadership, or would simply like to take part in one of our activities, we would love to have you.
