I taught a bilingual first grade classroom in Los Angeles, and always dreamt of my children attending a school like that. PLEASE keep me updated on this school. I have four children, and hope that at least one could attend.

    Thank you for pursuing this!

  2. I went through French Immersion from PK – Senior year and it has served me well. I can’t wait for my children to experience this in Saint Louis.

Hello Jane (or anyone with Language Immersion experience), I know your post on the SLLIS weblog was several years ago. We’ve registered our daughter to attend the French School next Fall. My husband has apprehensions about the program. I don’t think he truly appreciates the benefits of language immersion. He’s concerned with a wide spectrum of students those who are more advanced learners would suffer due to the teachers’ need to focus on those students who are struggling. He wants our daughter to attend the Gift Program at the SLPS where she was accepted. Being that you experienced language immersion for 12 years, what benefits and\or opportunities would you say it provided you as you entered college & a professional career?

Any advice you could give would be very much appreciated!!

      • Hi Marybeth,

Thanks for your message. I am the communications intern and administrator for the SLLIS blog. I have never attended a language immersion school, though I wish that I would have because of the cognitive, linguistic and social benefits that come from bilingualism, which is much easier to attain at a young age. The Center for Applied Linguistics has many resources that explain the nature and benefits of language immersion education: http://www.cal.org/resources/digest/0304fortune.html I would suggest that you and your husband check out the scientific literature on the subject if you haven’t already.

Equally important, I would encourage you to speak with other parents about SLLIS. Many of our parents are more than willing to share their opinions and observations about their family’s experience with SLLIS and language immersion. A great opportunity for this is the TFS Kindergarten Play Date on May 12th at 10 am at SLLIS. You’ll be able to talk to existing families, new families and TFS staff about any questions
        or concerns you may have.

Hopefully this was helpful! Please let us know if you have any other questions. You can email me directly at nicole.joslin@sllis.org.

I was just talking with my husband about much I want our daughter to attend an immersion school. I teach spanish and am a fluent speaker but its a daunting task trying to teach my daughter. We are so excited at the thought of her having such an rewarding opportunity. I’d be glad to give my support however I can.
