After-School Activities 2012: Looking for Parent Coordinators and Student Pick-Up Assistance

Assistant Heads of School are preparing to launch the Winter Session after-school activities. Parent assistance is crucial to running our after-school activities! We are currently looking for parents to coordinate the following clubs (or assist by picking students up from classrooms at 3:30):

Mad Science, Yoga/ Body Bendy Animation, Garden Club, Ballroom Dance, Folk Fiddle

These clubs can not run without parent assistance! Help us keep these activities running AND guarantee your child a spot in the activity. Contact sonia@sllis.org if you are interested in student pick-up or helping coordinate.

After-school activity information and registration will be distributed next Monday, December 19.

Please contact Sonia at sonia@sllis.org or Maribel at maribel@sllis.org with questions.

Adios y au revoir, Amigos y Amis!

Today marks the end of the fall Amigos y Amis after-school program.  Details about plans for a winter/spring continuation will be announced by the school administration when they become available.

The Parents Assembly would like to thank all the staff members and teachers who ran the program, including the assistant heads of school, Sonia Emmons in TFS and Maribel Martinez in TSS, who oversee all the after-school programs.

After-school activities and clubs organized by the Parents Assembly will continue as scheduled between now and Jan. 20.  And our apologies — we know the different starting and ending dates are confusing, and we are working with the school to streamline these for the next session!

If you have a question about the starting or ending date of your child’s activities, please contact your parent coordinator.  If you have any other questions, e-mail Peter Manion, After-School Activities Task Force facilitator, at sllisPAafterschool@gmail.com.

Indoor soccer teams update

If you have a second- or third-grader who’s interested in playing indoor soccer this winter, please contact After-School Activities facilitator Peter Manion ASAP to let him know your application will be coming (and then download the application form here.).  Although registration has ended, he would like to try to fill those two grade-level teams if possible.  The teams are co-ed, and no previous playing experience is needed.

The kindergarten and first-grade teams are full.

There are more details about the league and game dates on the application. If you still have questions after reading it, please contact Peter at sllisPAafterschool@gmail.com.

Stack Up event reminder

Bring a can of food for the St. Louis Area Food Bank and come join the STACK UP! in the gym this Thursday, November 17 from 3:30-5:00 sponsored by the Speed Stacking Club. This event is open to anyone at SLLIS.

Learn to speed stack at the Education Station and then play stacking games provided around the gym. You can even order your own stacking supplies to continue the fun at home. Best of all, everyone who stacks for at least 30 minutes will be counted in the Guinness World Record numbers for the most people stacking around the world in a single day.

Even if you can’t make the event, we’d love for you to contribute to our food collection. Just look for the box in the lobby.

If you want to order speed stacking supplies, go to www.speedstacks.com, click on group order and look for our school. Our club gets 10% of the profits to buy more supplies. This current opportunity to order will end on Monday, November 21.

If you have any questions, please contact Lisa Berman at lisaberman@rocketmail.com or 314-398-6839.

More after-school activity lists and an application for indoor soccer

Here are the final rosters for the Term 2 after-school clubs and activities that will be starting in the coming month. If you have any questions about the rosters or about how to get a refund if your child’s name does not appear, please contact Peter Manion, interim After-School Activities facilitator, at sllisPAafterschool@gmail.com.

Indoor soccer season will run Jan. 6 to Feb. 28.  Due to the league deadline, applications need to be turned in by Nov. 11.  The After-School Activities Task Force hopes to field four teams, one per grade, with 15 players per team.  Price is $60 per player, which includes eight weeks of practice and eight recreational games, plus a jersey and exceptional coaching from our very own SLLIS interns and staff!

For more details, including practice times for each grade, download the Indoor Soccer Application Form. Submit it with payment before Nov. 11 to one of the PA lockboxes (in the front office or near the playground doors).  Applications will be considered on a first-come, first-served basis. (Please read the instructions carefully! Applications that do not follow the instructions will be placed at the bottom of the pile.)

New after-school activities start this week

Several of the Parents Assembly’s Term 2 after-school activities are starting this week!  If you applied for one of these clubs and have not yet heard from the parent coordinator, please check the rosters to see if your child is listed.

Also, please note that all communications from the parent coordinators will come via e-mail, so it is very important that our parent volunteers have the BEST e-mail address to reach you.

If you have any questions or would like to update the e-mail address you provided on your application form, please contact Peter Manion, the interim facilitator of the After-School Activities Task Force, at sllisPAafterschool@gmail.com.

There is some overlap between Term 1 and Term 2 activities — for example, chess, speed stacking and circus continue into December, and Capoeira ends in November.  If you have any questions about your club’s end date, please contact the parent coordinator.

Spaces still available for several after-school activities

The rosters for Term 2 after-school clubs and activities are being finalized right now and should be posted in the lobby and sent out via e-mail on Tuesday, Oct. 18.  In the meantime, the Parents Assembly’s After-School Activities Task Force is going to try something new: a late registration to take advantage of spaces that still remain in the following clubs and activities:

  • Creative drawing kindergarten
  • Creative drawing grades 2 and 3
  •  Ballroom dancing (boys preferred)
  • Salsa Tuesdays (boys preferred)
  • Basketball grades 2 and 3

Due to high demand, a few additional spaces have been added to:

  • Basketball kindergarten
  • Basketball grade 1 Sorry, these are now full.

To participate in late registration, please download this form, print it out and follow the instructions on the application.  Paper copies will also be available in the front office.

Please note that no late applications will be accepted for the other Term 2 activities. (These are full:  Garden Club, Crafty Kids, Body Bendy Animation, Flexible Yoga, Salsa Thursdays, Creative Drawing grade 1 and Cheerleading).

If you have any questions, please contact the After-School Activities interim facilitator, Peter Manion, at sllisPAafterschool@gmail.com.

After-school activities update: Clubs that are at or near capacity

If you are planning to turn in your after-school activities application form tomorrow (Friday, Oct. 14), please note that:

  • Crafty Kids is full. No more applications will be accepted.
  • These activities have fewer than three spots remaining: Cheerleading, Garden Club, Creative Drawing – 1st grade, Basketball – 1st and 2nd grade, and Basketball – kindergarten.

It is very likely that those five activities will be filled early in the day on Friday.  Waiting lists are not being created, so it’s a good idea to choose other options that are more likely to have the space to enroll your child.  If your application comes in after your chosen activity is full, your payment will be returned.

Rosters for all the after-school activities will be finalized over the weekend. They will be sent home via e-mail and posted in the front lobby and near the playground doors.  You will receive any additional information via e-mail from the parent coordinator of the activity your child is enrolled in.

Volunteers are always needed to help escort students to/from the activities!  If you are able to do this, please let your parent coordinator know.

If you have any questions about the application process — or if you would like to propose an idea for Term 3 coming up in January! — please contact the After-School Activities interim facilitator, Peter Manion, at sllisPAafterschool@gmail.com.
